Specialist Interests

Older Adults, Later Life & Caring

Through her current NHS work, Melissa has a particular interest in the psychological challenges that can arise in later life. This includes adjusting to changes in health, memory, independence and relationships, as well as grief and loss.

She also works with family members and carers navigating the emotional impact of supporting a loved one through illness, ageing or cognitive change.

Physical Health & Chronic Pain

Melissa has a specialist interest in supporting people living with chronic pain and long-term physical health difficulties.

She understands that physical health difficulties can affect much more than symptoms alone, impacting mood, relationships, work, independence and a person’s sense of who they are.

Attachment & Relationships

Melissa is particularly interested in how our early relationships and experiences can influence the way we see ourselves and relate to others.

She works with clients who want to better understand longstanding or recurring patterns in their relationships, emotional responses or sense of self, and develop more helpful ways of relating to themselves and others.

Culture, Ethnicity & Identity

Melissa has a strong research and clinical interest in the influence of culture, ethnicity and identity on psychological wellbeing and people’s experiences of seeking support.

Her doctoral research explored help-seeking among families when a loved one of African Caribbean heritage experiences memory loss, receiving the FPOP Poster Prize in 2025. She has also published research exploring the experiences of ethnic minority people who identify as a sexual minority.

Therapeutic Approach

Melissa draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic approaches, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and narrative approaches, tailoring therapy to the individual.

For some clients, therapy may focus on practical strategies to manage difficulties such as anxiety or low mood. For others, it may involve developing a deeper understanding of longstanding patterns, relationships and experiences and how these continue to affect them in the present.

Melissa offers a warm, thoughtful and non-judgemental space and works collaboratively with clients to understand their difficulties and identify meaningful changes they would like to make.

Qualifications

Melissa holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

She is a registered Practitioner Psychologist with The Health Care Professional Council (HCPC), which monitors and regulates the practice of Clinical Psychologists.
