Experience

Dr Katy Lord is a Counselling Psychologist and has worked with both common and complex mental health difficulties across third sector and NHS settings. She has experience working in a number of therapeutic modalities and is primarily an integrative practitioner, drawing on thinking from psychodynamic, eye movement desensitisation reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment Therapy (ACT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), and cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) approaches, based on individuals’ goals, the shared formulation and best practice. Her therapeutic style is predominantly relational; she views the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for working with the process of therapy and creating a trusting environment where another person’s experience and suffering can be understood and tolerated together.

Katy has experience working individually with adults across different social and cultural backgrounds and strives to understand how these backgrounds may shape individuals’ experiences in the world, including systemic issues that impact on distress. She has worked with individuals struggling with severe and reoccurring depression and anxiety, symptoms of psychosis, bipolar, PTSD and complex PTSD, as well as those struggling with interpersonal, identity and self-esteem issues. She has a keen interest in helping individuals to develop a more compassionate relationship with themselves to combat shame and self-criticism that can be central to their struggles.

Katy wrote her doctoral thesis on experiences of infidelity in romantic relationships, which explored how societal expectations and pressures shape the way relationships are experienced and understood. She integrates this thinking into her practice; offering a non-judgemental approach to explore individuals’ difficulties in context.

Alongside her work with Mollart CBT Ltd. Katy works in a NHS secondary care mental health service working with individuals with complex mental health needs.
