Workplace Mental Health
The financial and social costs of poor mental health in the workplace continue to rise. Recent research estimates that poor mental health costs UK employers around £51 billion each year, through sickness absence, reduced productivity (presenteeism), and staff turnover.

More broadly, the overall economic and social cost of mental ill health in England has been estimated at around £300 billion annually, highlighting the significant impact on individuals, organisations and society.
Mental health difficulties are common within the workplace. At any one time, around one in six employees may be experiencing difficulties such as stress, anxiety or depression.
The most common mental health difficulties affecting employees include:
-
Long-term physical health conditions (e.g. chronic pain)

Early recognition of difficulties within the workplace is key to preventing both absenteeism and presenteeism (when employees are present at work but performing below their usual level). Identifying concerns early, or intervening quickly when problems arise, can prevent longer-term difficulties and reduce the associated loss of productivity.
